Business Spending

Control what leaves the account, and know why it left.

Spending problems are usually control problems, not discipline problems. Unclear limits, personal cards used for company purchases and receipts that never arrive.

This hub covers expense systems, employee cards, business credit cards and how to judge whether cashback is worth anything after costs.

Spending control checklist

Six controls that remove most expense chaos.

  • One card per person, never shared
  • A written limit per card and per category
  • Receipt capture at the till, not at month end
  • A single approval route for anything above a set value
  • Weekly review of uncategorised transactions
  • Full statement repayment by direct debit where credit is used

Frequently asked questions

Is a business credit card better than a debit card?
Different, not better. Credit adds timing flexibility, purchase protection and controls, and adds interest risk and eligibility requirements.
Does cashback make a card free?
Only if you clear the balance in full every month and the plan fee is lower than the rewards earned. One month of interest usually erases a year of cashback.
